As We Think, So We Become
It is our responsibility to manage our intellect and ego. Choice can
bring healthy, useful, benevolent and wholesome thoughts to the intellect.
No one is a victim. You choose your thoughts. Thoughts become feelings
and lead to actions, which through repetition over time become character. Ultimately
thoughts mange the energy field of which we are all a part.
You can replace a negative and
unhealthy thought with a positive and healthy one. You have choice. When
you
entertain a thought, it has a direct effect upon all bodies—mental,
emotional, spiritual and physical. As the thought is entertained, immediately
you begin to
emit the signals corresponding to this thought. For example, when you are
afraid the physical body goes through various changes - chemically, hormonally,
visually. You become filled with fear.
As we think, so we become. If you entertain ugly thoughts for a long
time, your being will take on the form of these thought vibrations. If you repress
negative thoughts and feelings, you become those negatives feelings, because
that is where you are focusing your consciousness. What you focus on,
expands. It is your responsibility
to do an inner inventory to assess what you think both consciously and
unconsciously. And likewise, if you entertain beneficial, wholesome, and
beautiful thoughts, your being will absorb and emit these qualities. If
you
are surrounded by negative thinking people, then it is highly probable that you
will absorb these opinions and values. The same applies for positive,
spiritually charged atmospheres.
Change and transformation is a process. It takes time and practice to
learn a new skill. Addictive thinking or habitual thinking requires
discipline, focus and vigilance to change. With practice you can change
anything. Like a sculptor chipping away at her stone to make a nice
statue, so too you can chip away at your habits one day at a time.
The reality of changing habits is explained in the following story:
"A violent and angry man goes to see a Nun because he is fed up with his
mind. She gives him a bowl and two bags. In one bag are black beads and in
the other bag are white beads. She tells him to put a white bead in his
bowl every time he thinks a healthy and positive thought or performs a good and
wholesome act, and to put a black bead in the bowl every time he thinks
unhealthy and negative thoughts or performs negative actions.
The man went away with his beads and bowl. To begin with, at the end of
each day his bowl was overflowing with black beads and he was not happy.
'Look at all these black beads,' he sighed, 'I will try to do a little better
tomorrow.'
Eventually, white beads began to show up in his bowl at the end of each day.
He realized that he was changing habits and that it is possible. It is a
choice. You can be gentle, patient, kind and good to yourself."
Remember to count your white beads as well as your black ones! Be
patient with yourself and others. Be grateful for what works rather than
focusing on what doesn’t work.
